GFZ has implemented a GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) Follow-on (GRACE-FO) mission with NASA which was successfully launched in May 2018. As for GRACE, GFZ is part of the GRACE-FO US-German Science Data System (SDS) and, besides others, responsible for Level-2 and Level-3 product generation as well as data dissemination to international users.
The GRACE/GRACE-FO satellite orbit dynamics are driven by conservative (gravity field), non-conservative (drag by the atmosphere, pressure by solar radiation, etc.) and empirical (temperature dependent, etc.) forces which are modeled and parameterized in our core Earth Parameter and Orbit System software package EPOS (about 130.000 lines of code and comments). By evaluating the onboard observations (GPS, inter-satellite microwave and Laser ranging, attitude and accelerometer data) in a least squares sense the parameters we are interested in can be inferred with high accuracy and at the same time highly accurate orbits can be determined. Main result is a time series of spherical harmonic coefficients representing monthly variations of the Earth's gravity field since 2002. These Level-2 products have recently been reprocessed by improved background models and processing standards and serve for generation of user-friendly Level-3 products provided via the Gravity Information Service (GravIS).

Your responsibilities:

  • scientific guidance and technical leadership of employees working on time variable gravity field modeling
  • handling and further development of the Earth Parameter and Orbit System (EPOS) software package and its periphery for GRACE/GRACE-FO and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) data analysis
  • regular implementation of new background models and processing standards into the EPOS periphery
  • routine processing of GRACE-FO monthly Level-2 and Level-2B gravity field models with current RL06 standards
  • regular reprocessing of complete GRACE/GRACE-FO mission data
  • validation of new implementations and reprocessed models
  • distribution of data and documentation via GFZ's Information System and Data Center (ISDC)
  • contribution to the further development of the Gravity Information Service (GravIS)
  • GFZ's single point of contact for SDS partners NASA/JPL (NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory) and UTCSR (University of Texas Center for Space Research)
  • preparation and presentation of results in project meetings, symposia, and in scientific journals
  • preparation of third party funding proposals related with gravity field determination

Your qualifications:

  • Master's degree and PhD (finished or being finished soon) in Geodesy or equivalent
  • in depth experience in precise orbit determination and estimation of gravity field parameters and other geodetic parameters based on the dynamic approach and on satellite tracking data such as high-low GNSS, low-low inter-satellite links, SLR, and others (must be proven by relevant publications and PhD topic)
  • in depth expertise in least squares adjustment (observation level) and linear algebra (normal equation level)
  • in depth expertise in (big) data processing under LINUX and shell scripting
  • in depth expertise in FORTRAN
  • strong ability for autonomous working
  • strong ability for and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team and to communicate with GFZ internal and external international partners
  • good command of English
Starting date: 1st March 2020
Fixed term: permanent
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 14 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications.
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week)
