Director of the „Geoinformation“ Department at the GFZ with a Professorship (W3) at a University (m/f/x)

The job holder advances the digital transformation at the GFZ. They are responsible for the sustainably usable, coordinated information and data infrastructure of the GFZ and its enhancement. As a member of the directorate, they advise the Executive Board on questions regarding digitalization and IT strategy. This position has been planned with the option of a professorship for “Data Science/Geoinformation” at a university local to the GFZ.

Your responsibilities:

  • leading the “Geoinformation” department
  • leading the newly formed section for “Data Science/Geoinformation”
  • taking over the role as Chief Information Officer at the GFZ
  • W3-Professorship at a university (optional)

Your tasks:

  • strategic responsibility for and development of the department “Geoinformation” (currently Data and Information and IT Services) with up to 100 employees, in the context of GFZ strategy and the Helmholtz mission
  • perform the role of CIO at the GFZ and lead the research data management strategic committee as well as the GFZ IT committee
  • representation and advancement of the GFZ IT-strategy with regards to the digitalization strategy of the Helmholtz Association
  • development and leading of the “Data Science/Geoinformation” section with independent research orientation, in cooperation with the other scientific sections at the GFZ
  • creating an active network between departments at the GFZ for subjects on IT/Research Data Management and further development of competencies
  • shaping the collaboration with other Helmholtz Centers, universities and scientific institutes in the area of IT/Research Data Management/Data-Science
  • participating in internal and external committees
  • personnel management, resource planning, resource responsibility
  • establishing consistent processes, standards and guidelines
  • obtain joint research projects

Your qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Geo Sciences, Computer Sciences or equivalent qualification
  • PhD and postdoc experience in the area of “Data Science/Geoinformation” or related disciplines
  • management skills and experience in the planning, management and coordination of complex IT-areas
  • advanced knowledge of research data management
  • national and international connections in the area of geoinformation
  • very good knowledge of the national, European and international scientific system, experience in co-operations within and between science organizations and their institutes
  • strong communication skills and assertiveness
  • fluent in business English, international candidates should be willing to quickly learn German
  • experience obtaining third-party funding and leading large third-party funded projects
  • teaching experience and experience with supervising final theses (BSc, MSc or dissertations)
Start date: as soon as possible
Contract-type: permanent
Salary: If the professional and personal requirements are fulfilled, remuneration will be on the basis of a W3 salary in accordance with the principles of the Federal Government for non-tariff employees.
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week)
