The Earth-Atmosphere Interactions (TEAM) Group of the Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics Section offers 2 positions for

Postdoctoral Researchers (m/f/x)

Job Vacancy No. 3061

within the recently funded Helmholtz-Initiative Climate Adaptation and Mitigation (HI-CAM). HI-CAM is a collaborative initiative involving partners from 14 Helmholtz research centers with the aim to map out the key issues, examine methods and ideas proposed so far, and analyze scenarios relevant for developing a national Net-Zero Emissions strategy.
As part of the “Nature-based mitigation solutions” subproject, you will leverage and integrate existing multi-year records of CO2 and CH4 exchange from NE German peatland sites with regional scale airborne eddy covariance observations, remote sensing, and machine learning approaches to (1) quantify current GHG emission of rewetted peatlands and other organic soil dominated landscapes, (2) assess their mitigation potential in relation to management options and land use pathways (e.g. crops vs. grass vs. forest; drained vs. wet vs. flooded), and (3) independently verify/refine GHG emission factors as needed.

Your responsibilities (freely dividable between the two positions or to be tackled jointly):

  • assess temporal and spatial controls of GHG dynamics on local and regional scales
  • apply quantitative analytical methods to large datasets
  • integrate local (Eddy Covariance flux tower based) and airborne eddy covariance datasets
  • generate data-driven emission & mitigation potential maps; identify low intervention/high impact regions
  • generate and test hypotheses
  • work as part of a multi-institutional team
  • present results at scientific meetings and publish results in scientific journals

Your qualifications:

  • doctoral degree in atmospheric/environmental science, meteorology, physics, geoecology, or related field
  • in-depth knowledge of land-atmosphere interactions, EC flux and other micro-met measurements
  • excellent coding and quantitative analytical skills (incl. large data sets), preferably in Matlab, R, or Python
  • creative & critical thinking and ability to publish shown by a track record of original and innovative research
  • strong motivation and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • motivation & experience to act as multiplier (e.g. recruit & supervise students, apply for follow-up projects)
  • ability to work both independently and in an integrated team environment
  • collaboration with researchers at both national and international institutes
  • fluency in English (written and spoken), German is beneficial but not required
Starting date: as soon as possible
Fixed term: 2 years
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications.
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment.
Location: Potsdam
