We are looking for a new colleague (m/f/x) to focus their research on mineral formation and characterization to complement the “Interface-Geochemistry” team:

Research Associate (PostDoc) on Mineral Formation and Electron Microscopy (m/f/x)

Your responsibilities:

  • conduct original research on mineral formation in inorganic and bio-mineral systems
  • spearhead developments of cryo-electron microscopy imaging and spectral analyses of complex geo-bio-materials
  • develop workflows to interface research between cryo-SEM and cryo-TEM
  • help integrate high-resolution imaging results with theoretical and modelling results
  • publish in international peer-reviewed journals; present research results at scientific meetings
  • lead and/or considerably contribute to writing proposals for 3rd party funding for future developments in SEM analyses/imaging
  • help co-supervise Master's and PhD students

Your qualifications (essential in bold/desirable in italics):

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) and PhD degree in geosciences, material sciences or equivalent with a strong focus on microscopy
  • at least 3 years of well-documented, hands-on expertise in SEM imaging/analyses, using non-conventional approaches with emphasis on cryo-imaging, EDS mapping, time-resolved imaging, nano-tomography and/or EBSD
  • experience with ZEISS and FEI instruments
  • documented skills in imaging/analyses of complex materials and of hybrid inorganic-biological samples in conventional and cryo-mode
  • skills or experience in development of new analytical data processing tools or novel SEM techniques
  • experience in working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • capacity for interdisciplinary and international teamwork and excellent communication skills
  • demonstrated experience in the supervision of students
  • proficiency in spoken and written English (grants and publication record), German is an asset

Starting date: 1st March 2020 or earliest possible
Fixed term: 36 months (with possibility of extension)
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications.
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment.
Location: Potsdam
