As a partner in Geo.X, the GFZ has access to an excellent network of other geoscience institutions in Potsdam and Berlin. This largest regional concentration of geoscientific competence in Europe offers first-class cooperation and development opportunities.
For section 2.4 "Seismology" (department 2 "Geophysics"), we are looking for a:

PhD Student (m/f/x) in Project SaMOVAR

Reference Number 4346

In the frame of the DFG funded research project SaMOVAR (SeisMic Observations of deep VolcAnic pRocesses) the successful candidate will analyze seismological data from a volcanic region in Kamchatka (Russia). The investigation aims to identify temporal variations in the propagation properties of seismic waves as they are induced by volcanic activity, earthquakes or environmental influences. High resolution data from a temporary seismic installation will be combined with the long term observations of a permanent network. Together with investigations of the deep volcanic structure and seismic sources in the target region, the results will contribute to a better understanding of magma transport processes at depth.
The work will be carried out in collaboration with the Universität Frankfurt and partners from Russia and France.

Your responsibilities:

  • adapt and develop new approaches and routines for the analysis of ambient seismic noise with seismic interferometry
  • analysis of noise based signals for temporal variations as well as deterministic signals for imaging of subsurface structures
  • interpretation of results with respect to volcanic and seismic activity as well as environmental influences
  • present results at workshops, international conferences and in scientific publications

Your qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, physics, mathematics or computer science, or in a related field
