For section 3.1 "Inorganic and Isotope Geochemistry" (department 3 "Geochemistry"), we are looking for a:

PhD Student (m/f/x) - Modelling of ore-forming processes

on the topic “Crossing the magmatic-hydrothermal interface within ore-forming systems with numerical models”.
The project is part of the DFG Priority Program DOME (Dynamics of Ore Enrichment), which combines “empirical field-related studies that define the geological/mineralogical framework of natural ore systems with experimental work and numerical models that provide a quantitative understanding of the processes involved”. The PhD student will be part of the ore deposit group at GFZ Potsdam and will be supervised by PD Dr. Philipp Weis.

Your responsibilities:

  • conduct original research on ore formation in magmatic-hydrothermal systems
  • apply and further develop a novel coupled model for magma convection and hydrothermal fluid flow
  • collaborate with field-oriented projects of the DOME program by using the numerical simulations to understand ore-forming processes at specific deposits
  • actively participate in the agenda of the DFG Priority Program, including general assemblies, topical workshops and young scientist workshops
  • report regularly to the collaborators, publish in international peer-reviewed journals and present research results at scientific meetings
  • participate in the educational program and pursue a PhD degree at the associated university

Your qualifications:

  • M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in a discipline of geosciences
  • background knowledge in aspects of geology, mineralogy, igneous petrology, hydrothermal systems and ore deposits relevant for the project
  • previous experience in either economic geology or numerical modeling in any discipline of geosciences is advantageous
  • strong interest in learning new modelling techniques and further developing cutting-edge research code
  • strong interest in interdisciplinary work and scientific exchange within the Priority Program
  • demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team
  • candidates are expected to write their PhD thesis in English

Start date: 1st October 2020
Fixed-term: 3 years
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications.
Working hours: part-time 75% (currently 29.25 h/week)
